The first time we visited America, Ed Rill took us to San Francisco. It was a fantastic trip. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge I had heard of while in Africa, and he showed us the Redwood Forest. Some of the trees were 3,000 years old. It was incredible. I remember riding on the cable cars. That was when I ‘let loose.’ The built up tension of the trip, the plane journey, a new country and everything, must have built up a lot of tension inside of me. On the little cable car, I started laughing and shouting, and it felt like all the tension went away. It was like a release in my spirit. So San Francisco means a lot to me. I remember seeing a postcard of Alcatraz Island, and it said: “Wish you were here.” Then I found out that it used to be a prison!

We’ll meet again

I started listening to Vera Lynn’s version of this old time song, then I found Julie Andrews, and I liked her one. Years ago I sang with an old-timers band in Africa, and this one of the songs they used to sing. During war time, you never know if you will ever see your friends or family again, so this song has a lot of meaning. Just before this I was doing a page on The Shadows, and I forgot to put this story on that page, but the captain of our rugby team used to play guitar like Hank Marvin. Years later I heard from his brother Roger that he got killed in Rhodesia. His name was Brian Furber. So sometimes, we don’t meet again.

As time goes by

This is one of the old time songs I remember my mother singing when I was little. To me it felt like a Second World War song because of the words: “A case of do or die.” I think it is Frank Sinatra singing.

When it’s springtime in the Rockies

Here is another old time song I heard my mother sing. I used to sing this song in Africa, and dream of going to the Rockies one day. Lots of my dreams have come true. Here is Slim Whitman singing.

Perry Como and an old time song

I have heard this song when I was young, and heard it again recently on an old time radio station. “Don’t let the stars get in your eyes, don’t let the moon break your heart.”

Side by side

This song came to my mind the other day. I remember seeing it on TV when I was little. It was a guy and a girl dancing and singing. I can’t find them, so here is Laurel and hardy, and it is sung by Kay Starr.

I also have a Gospel web site.
