The Gaither Trio

Back in the 70′s, when I was a temporary resident in South Africa, I bought lot of The Bill Gaither Trio records, and they were a great blessing to me. The other day somebody spoke to me and said my site was not just about favorite love songs, so I explained that some songs are about love for trucks, or animals, or God, etc. These folks sing a lot about their love for Jesus.

1.  The King is coming

I first heard this song in the 70′s when it was sung in the Roodepoort City Hall, by an American preacher. The people all stood up and started praising the Lord. It felt so exciting. After that I bought Gaither records, and sang that song all over Southern Africa. I saw a car sticker once that said: “Jesus is coming soon, look busy.”

2. Because He lives

I loved this song too, and I remember singing it at a home for unwed mothers in Bulawayo. One girl ran out of the room crying. I loved doing the talking part that Gloria did. In 1979 the song took on further meaning when we were in the empty garden tomb in Jerusalem. We had a tremendous praise meeting in there. When we came out, all the people waiting in line looked at us with big eyes. I thought of them again when we were “In the upper room” but I can’t find their version on the net. Also when we saw Golgotha, the song: “I’ve been to Calvary.”

3.  The Church Trimphant

This song was also a great blessing to me, and I also did the talking part. “God has always had a people, who could not be bought, murdered, flattered or stilled.” “The purest stream is the one that bursts crystal clear into the sunlight, after it has fought it’s way through solid rock.” So many words were such a great blessing.

4. Jesus – something about that Name

I loved the talking parts done by Gloria. There was always such a blessing in the way she spoke.

5. Something good

“I have noticed in the paper all the bad news.” The songs are still relevant today! The gospel is the Good News.

6. The longer I serve Him

Last week when I was looking on the net for songs, this song was such a blessing to me, and has kept running through my mind this past week. So many of their songs have been such a great blessing to me. When we were in Cape Town two songs kept running through my mind: “Something about a mountain” and “A little bit of sunshine.”

7. The old rugged cross made the difference

“T’was a life filled with aimless desperation.”

8. This is the time I must sing

Thanks Gaithers for all your nice singing. At one time when I was singing in the Cape Town area, I got a whole lot of The Bill Gaither  Trio records from a distributor, and they sold like hot cakes at the meetings.

9. I could never outlove the Lord

The words of their songs have so much meaning. “There were times when giving and loving brought pain.”

10. You’re something special

Everyone is special. The devil wants you to fell worthless, but he is a liar.

11. I am a promise

Here is another children’s song that is good.

I also have an all gospel site where I will upload more of their songs. It is called Country Gospel and Bible.

Movie Songs

Some movie songs have had a big influence on me and have affected my life. Here are some of them.

Climb every mountain

The Sound of Music film was a hit when I was a teenager, but my parents felt that going to the cinema was a sin, so I didn’t go to movies. Many years later, in the late 70′s, a friend showed The Sound of Music in a theatre, and this song influenced me. “Climb every mountain, till you find your dream.” So I decided to move to North America, to try and get into the music industry.

Jailhouse Rock

The first rock and roll record I ever heard was Jailhouse Rock. I was so attracted to the drums and guitar playing, and the exciting voice of Elvis. It was only about 20 years later that I actually saw the movie on TV in Canada. I had a music book of that song with pictures of Elvis.

Movie song – East bound and down

When we first visited the USA in 1976, we were in South Carolina, and the people there were using CB radios to talk to each other. It was a whole new world for us. The following year in South Africa, we saw the movie of Smokey and the Bandit, and it reminded us of the great time we had in America. It made me want to go back. I don’t agree with most of the morals, but it was so exciting. It is one of my favorites.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

When I was doing forced military duty with the Rhodesian Air Force, this song was a big hit. I always associate it with having a shower, because at home we only had a bath, but at the air force they only had showers. It was about 20 years later that we saw the movie on TV in Canada. Actually, B.J.Thomas is singing at the Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls on Feb.5.2011.

Oh what a beautiful morning

I heard this song when I was young, and it always felt good. Many years later I saw just a little bit of the movie on TV in Canada.

Bonanza

Here is Johnny Cash singing the song. As a teenager in Bulawayo, I used to pedal on my bicycle to a friend’s house to watch TV, and Bonanza was one of the shows I saw. It was so exciting. Many years later we bought an LP record in Bulawayo of Lorne Greene singing this song. There were so many nice songs on that record. When we first visited America we went to the Ponderosa Ranch, but it was closed for the season. (In Africa, everything is open all year – no bad winters there!) Years later I was shocked to find that Lorne Greene was from Canada. My heart was really touched when I found out that many orphans wrote to him asking him to adopt them because they wanted him to be their dad.

James Bond 007 theme song

I was doing air force duty in Gwelo when I saw the first James Bond movie called Dr. No, and I loved this music. At the time the guys in the air force had James Bond books, and I had read the book before I saw the movie.

Davy Crockett

This song had a big influence on me when I was a little boy. I had a comic of Davy Crockett, and I had this song too. So many words in this song sounded so great to me. “The greenest State in the land of the free.” “An’ lit out a grinnin’ to follow the sun.” “His land is the biggest, and his land is the best.” How is that for promoting America! Many years later in Canada I found out there was a TV series too, and according to the internet, there was also a movie. I used to make my own toy guns and crawl around the yard, pretending I was Davy Crockett.

Many of the songs I link to on the YouTube seem to get removed. Maybe they were pirate copies, or maybe they were stolen by the Pirates of the Caribbean. If any of you see Johnny Depp, ask him if he has seen the songs.

Country Gospel

1. The baptism of Jesse Taylor

This is one of my favorite love songs when it comes to Country Gospel. I first heard this song back in 1976, when we were visiting in Virginia, USA. I heard this it on somebody’s car radio, and loved it. Back in South Africa, I found it in a record store in Hillbrow, sung by Connie Smith, so I bought it, and sang it. It means a lot to me. I have met some people in South Africa who were like Jesse Taylor, and whose lives have been changed by faith in Jesus.

2. Why me Lord

Back in the 70′s I sang at a high school in Roodepoort, and a schoolboy lent me this record, which I sang quite often.

3. The Fourth Man

4. The Old Account

I used to sing this song a lot when I was young. As I listened a bit to this song again today, The Lord is speaking to my heart. If God is willing to settle our accounts, we too must be willing to settle other people’s accounts.

5. Wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now

I heard this song back in the 60′s by Jimmy Swaggart, and am so pleased to find it here by The Goodmans.

Rock Songs

I am not sure how to define what is a rock song, but here goes, and I hope you enjoy them.

I still haven’t found what I’m looking for

Back in the 80′s I worked at a high school, and heard this U2 song on the jukebox. One student who played the guitar real good said he wanted to do this kind of gospel music.

Maggie

I have heard this song a few times on the radio. There is something about Rod Stewart and his songs that is fascinating to me.

We didn’t start the fire

A friend in Switzerland sent me this song, and said it was a history lesson. Apparently Billy Joel wanted to be a history teacher, and some versions have all the words, if you want to check them out.

It’s my life

I have heard one song on the radio where a guy sings that it is his life, and other people mustn’t tell him what to do.

19th Nervous Breakdown

The Rolling Stones songs always seem aggressive, and I remember this one from when I was young.

Never gonna give you up

This song was on the Damelin College jukebox too, back in the 80′s, so I am adding it in. It has some good words.

Such a Night

This is one of my favorite love songs and it was on my mind this morning, so I am adding it in. Today is my birthday, and Ontario has made it a public holiday (in my honor!). Feb 21. 2011.

Crazy little thing called love

Here is Michael Buble singing “live” before a fantastic audience.

Many of the songs I link to on the YouTube seem to get removed. Maybe they were pirate copies, or maybe they were stolen by the Pirates of the Caribbean. If any of you see Johnny Depp, ask him if he has seen the songs.

Girl Singers

There are so many wonderful girl singers, so here are a few, singing favorite love songs.

Donna Fargo

“The happiest girl in the whole U.S.A.” was the first song I ever heard by Donna Fargo. It is so nice to be happy, and I wish everyone in the whole wide world could be happy.

Jeanie C. Riley

“Harper Valley PTA” was a really big hit for Jeanie C. Riley when I was young, and I wish I could play the guitar the way it is played on the record.

Tammy Wynette

“Stand by your man.” I think this song was a world wide hit. Sometimes it must be hard to be a woman. Men are so bull headed! To me, women are symbols of love, but I think it is the men who start all the wars and troubles in the world.

Brenda Lee

“Sweet nothin’” This was a big hit when I was a young teenager, and I related very strongly with this song. I didn’t know what to talk about with a girl. “My baby gave me that special look!”

Girl Singers – The Dixie Cups

This song scared me when I was a teenager. I guess I was scared to get married. Some parts of the song are very true though: “I’ll never be lonely anymore.”

The Shirelles

“Soldier Boy.” In my country, the guys had to do military training, and this song was often played on the radio in the request programs.

Debbie Reynolds

“Tammy.” I read the book by Debbie Reynolds, and it was very interesting. She had a hit with this song.

Patti Page

“Tennessee Waltz.” Some people have got it all, beauty and a nice voice! This song was too sad for me to sing, but I don’t mind hearing Patti Page sing it.

Linda Ronstadt

“Blue Bayou.” I love the way Linda Ronstadt hits those high notes. I can’t do that. She sings some good songs. I like her version of “Wayward Wind” too.

Nancy Sinatra

When I was young Nancy had a big hit with the boots song.

Mary Ford

I have heard Mary Ford on the radio recently and she sings very nice.

Debbie Boone

We heard Debbie in South Africa when she was there with her dad, and it was a great honour to meet her.

Many of the songs I link to on the YouTube seem to get removed. Maybe they were pirate copies, or maybe they were stolen by the Pirates of the Caribbean. If any of you see Johnny Depp, ask him if he has seen the songs.

Guy Singers

There are many guy singers that I like, so I have put some of them together here on this page.

Eddie Fisher

When I was a kid, I remember my mother talking about Eddie Fisher, but I didn’t have a clue about who he was. About ten years ago I read the book by Debbie Reynolds, and found out a lot about him. I was surprised to find he was the father of the princess in Star Wars. Last year I heard him singing this song on the radio, and liked his voice, his style, and his music. “I’m walking behind you.”

John D. Loudermilk

When I was a teenager, this guy’s song “Blue Train (of the heartbreak line)” was a hit, and I remember singing this song on a tape for my uncle, that got me a chance to do my first show. Memories!

Scott McKenzie

“San Francisco” was a big hit when I was at survey college in Salisbury, Rhodesia. I think it was to do with the hippie flower movement. We didn’t have those sort of movements in Africa, but it seemed very exciting.

Maurice Chevalier

“Thank heaven for little girls.” When I worked at a printing place in Bulawayo, I heard this song many times on the radio. I didn’t know the name of the singer until I searched for it on the net, but I remember this guy’s weird accent.

Guy Mitchell

“Singing the Blues” was a bit hit when I was a kid, and the world of singing and music seemed so exciting to me. However, when I have sung this song, it doesn’t give me the same joy, because it is so sad. That is why, when I sing, I like to sing songs that help to lift me up.

Jimmy Rodgers

“Honeycomb” brings special memories for me. When I was a little boy, it was a favorite love song, and I remember going with my big brother on our bicycles, peddling a long way to downtown Salisbury to listen to this song. It was at an ice cream shop, and we would order a scoop of ice cream each, with some sweet sauce on it, and put money in the jukebox to hear this sing. All that trouble and energy to hear one song, but the memories are sweet. This song has a double memory too, because this was the song I sang on TV in Bulawayo when the evangelist came on the show, and I had to come on right after him singing: “Honeycomb won’t you be my Baby?” That experience caused a big change in my life.

Many of the songs I link to on the YouTube seem to get removed. Maybe they were pirate copies, or maybe they were stolen by the Pirates of the Caribbean. If any of you see Johnny Depp, ask him if he has seen the songs.

Soldier Songs

Soldier songs have been a part of my life, because when I lived in Rhodesia, all the young guys had to do military training. It was very scary for me to leave home and go far away to do 9 months of training. Two of these songs featured here are songs I heard while in the Rhodesian Air Force.

1. Scottish Soldier – Andy Stewart

Although I am not Scottish, this one always tugs at my heart. I think it is to do with homesickness or something, because I don’t like fighting and killing either. We went to see my Mother in Scotland just before she passed away.

2. Where have all the flowers gone? – Peter, Paul and Mary

When I was a teenager, I went with my older brother on holiday to Margate in Natal. It was very exciting to me. One day he took me to a place where a band was playing, and people were requesting songs. This was one of the songs, and it was the first time I heard it. When will people ever learn to stop making wars?

3. Distant Drums – Jim Reeves

I first heard this song when we were sitting around the camp fire out in the boonies of Rhodesia. The air force sent us far away somewhere, and were had to cover the airplane with nets and branches, and the army was supposed to find us and have a mock attack. I had my guitar with me, and used to walk away from the campsite, and sing to myself. One time I heard a noise coming through the long grass, and I quickly went back to the camp and told them that the army was coming. So we all hid, waiting for the army to come out of the bushes. High alert. Then two cows came out of the long grass! I felt like such a fool, but anyway, the army never did find us. Later on at the air force base in Gwelo, my sergeant used to make me sing this song, but I had to change the words to: “I hear the sound of distant tom toms.” It was my favorite love song at the time.

4. Deck of Cards – Tex Ritter

When I was a boy, my mother told me it was a sin to play cards, but I must confess, I keep playing Solitaire and FreeCell on the computer, as it helps me to relax. My mother told me once that my Uncle Pat Cartwright got a medal for bravery in the North African Campaign of the Second World War.

5. Ruby – Mel Tillis

Here is the writer, singing his own song. Mr. Mel Tillis. I first heard this song by Kenny Rogers, but I don’t like the way he uses God’s name at the end. It goes against my religious beliefs.

6. Just a Dream – Carrie Underwood

I saw this song on TV by Carrie Underwood, so I thought I would put it in here.

7. The ballad of the Green Berets – Barry Sadler

This was a hit song when I did military training.

8. Fernando – Abba

To me this sounds like a war song, so I have decided to add it on to this page.

9. Sink the Bismarck – Johnny Horton

10. Heart of oak – The Royal Navy

I saw a play when I was a kid, and they sang this song.

11. Bob Hope Special – 1944 in the South Pacific

I have a book of Bob Hope called: “Don’t shoot, it’ only me.” He tells how when he was in North Africa, a German plane shot at him, and he jumped off the jeep into a ditch and sprained his ankle, or something. When the medical guy was attending to him, he seemed very nervous, so Bob asked him how he got in the medical section. So he said that when he filled in his army papers, he had to state where he had worked before, and he wrote: “Dr.Pepper.” So they put him in the medical!

Many years ago I had a record of Bud Chambers singing a song he wrote called: “News from Vietnam.” I can’t find it on the net, so I thought I would quote some words from my memory.

12. NEWS FROM VIETNAM by Bud Chambers

I heard the news about the war today from Vietnam. They say the fighting was much lighter in that far and distant land. There were three separate bombings on the northern battle land. Three soldiers lost their lives, out of three one was mine.
(Chorus)
They still say the war is cold, and we’re winning every day, but so many have been wounded and there are thousands in their graves. It’s not so bad to lose one soldier when so many have to die, but today things are different, one soldier boy is mine.
(Talking)

He was so young and so happy when he left one year ago. He bade the family all goodbye, but little did we know. It would be the last farewell for a soldier brave and kind. Yes today thing are different, one soldier boy is mine.

Many of the songs I link to on the YouTube seem to get removed. Maybe they were pirate copies, or maybe they were stolen by the Pirates of the Caribbean. If any of you see Johnny Depp, ask him if he has seen any of the songs!

Rose Songs

The Rose

Bette Midler sings it so good.

Room full of Roses

Here is Mickey Gilley. This is one of my favorite love songs. Lots of singers have sung this, but I first heard it by Jim Reeves. I remember working at a printing place in Bulawayo when this song was played on the radio. There is a singer in South Africa that has made this song very popular over there, and it is featured in one of Leon Schusters joke movies, where he dresses up as a woman and wants a rose, and a fight nearly breaks out. It was written by Tim Spencer, who later went into gospel singing and changed the words to “Christ is a wonderful Savior.”

Red roses for a blue lady

Lots of singers sing this, but here are the Ray Conniff Singers.

Paper roses

I heard this number on the radio by Anita Bryant, but I like the ‘live’ version by Marie Osmond.

Rose garden

This was a big hit for Lynn Anderson.

Where the roses never fade

Jill Mason and the Heartland Bluegrass Band.

Just one rose will do

The Lewis Family.

Many of the songs I link to on the YouTube seem to get removed. Maybe they were pirate copies, or maybe they were stolen by the Pirates of the Caribbean. If any of you see Johnny Depp, ask him if he has seen the songs.

Favourite love songs by Roy Orbison

When I was a teenager Roy Orbison had some hit songs. During my high school days, when I started singing at a showground in Salisbury, I was very shy, and wore dark glasses to hide my eyes. When I see photos of him without his dark glasses, it is a bit of a shock. It just doesn’t feel right! He must wear those dark glasses all the time! So here are some of my favourite love songs sung by him.

1. Pretty woman – on Dukes of Hazzard TV show

Nice video.
