Rhodesian Singers

The ‘Rhodesian Singers’ idea came to me after reading a book my sister wrote about her experiences in that country. She had it printed and sent me a copy which I received last week. Thanks Val. Her book “Sun Shining Down” by Diana Valerie Clark, is available on ebook at Amazon.co.uk at 3.31 pounds each. It is also available in America at amazon.com for $5.00.

1. Alan Garrity – Put your hand

This was a big hit for him in South Africa. I used to sing this song a lot too, after hearing him sing it. I was shocked to read that he was in the same school as me – Milton High in Bulawayo. I guess that he is one of the most famous Rhodesian singers.

2. Jody Wayne – Patches

I was listening to this song on the radio yesterday, and the one announcer said it was banned on some radio stations years ago. This is the song I always associate with Jody. I heard him once in South Africa. This Rhodesian singer was very famous in South Africa.

3. Alain D. Woolf – When love has passed you by

I never actually heard him sing before, but I bought a lot of his musical equipment from his mother in the suburb of Kumalo after he had left the country.

4. Memories – Peter Maxwell

Here are a lot of pictures that will bring back memories of Rhodesia. Peter plays the piano and talks.

5. John Edmond – Rhodies Everywhere

Here is a funny kind of song. I saw John singing once at the Rand Show in Johannesburg. We had an LP record of The Greenstones singing his songs: “Did you ever see a kudu cry little boy, did you ever see a kudu cry?”

6. Wrex Tarr – A Terrrorist’s lament

This was a big hit for him. Unfortunately things got very bad in that country. I think Ian Smith made a big mistake in declaring UDI. When I see what happened in Lybia, I realize that you can’t fight the world and win. Wrex was one of the most famous comedians in Rhodesia, but he was also a singer, and this song was on the hit parade.

7. Cold Shoulder

When I left Bulawayo, the Frost brothers formed their own group called The Cold Shoulder. They are now in Australia.

8. Paul Bernstein – The Stereos

Paul was a drummer, but I am putting him in here because he was in my class at Milton High School, and was always a pleasant person.

9. Brian Furber – Lead guitar

I heard Brian and Roger Furber playing guitars once at Milton High School, and they sounded like The Shadows, the band that backed Cliff Richard. Although I never heard him sing, I am putting his name in here as a memorial, because he was killed by the terrorists. He was also the captain of our rugby team. He did all the conversions – which I longed to do – kicking the ball through the goal posts after a try.

10. Barry Christopher Weimann – piano player

He was the exact same age as me – we were born on the same day. He was my neighbour in Greendale, Salisbury. On the Google satellite maps I can still see the pool we swam in behind their house. Sometimes we would be playing in the yard when his mother would call him in for his piano lessons. The same for his brother Peter. I am putting his name in here too as a memorial. When he was a pilot in the air force, his plane was shot down by the terrorists.

11. Tony Law – guitar player

We played guitar together in Bulawayo. I remember watching ‘Hollywood a go go’  on TV at his home. His sister was Sue. He got shot by the terrorists while on guard duty on a train.

12. John Hitchcock – singer, piano player and preacher

Back in the 70′s John invited me to sing at his church in Fort Victoria. He later made a few LP records in South Africa. Since then he moved to the United States.

13. Yan Venter – singer and preacher

I met Yan in Fort Victoria and have one of his LP records in my possession. Dr. Yan now concentrates on preaching in America and around the world.

14. Don Foster – When you’re in love

I was born in England, and named after Captain Donald Edgar Wills of the RAF. After the war, when I was 9 months old, my parents went back to Rhodesia. So I grew up in Rhodesia, and that was the world I knew.

Don Foster – It was the Rapture

Don Foster – That Elvis guitar

I just want to mention that the newspaper people changed some of the things I wrote.

Here is some money that my uncle sent me from Zimbabwe.

Zim 50 billion front

Zim 50 billion back

15. Tommy Archibald – Journey

He tells of how his truck hit a landmine, and he survived. Very interesting.

15. Mutt Lange – songwriter

He was born in Mufulira when it was Northern Rhodesia, and although I haven’t heard him sing, he wrote a lot of songs. He wrote songs with Shania Twain and was later married to her.

16. Bev Lemmer – singer, musician, writer

My niece sings, plays music, and has written a few books.

17. Rhodesian singer and musicians

I have been in contact with Pete Shout who does this website, and if any old Rhodies want to send him your information, then he can put it on his website. His email is: rhodiemusic@gmail.com

18. Pete Shout and the Bedrock Band

Pete is from Bulawayo, at present in Cape Town.

19. Dan Shout – Saxophone

Dan is also from Bulawayo, now also in Cape Town.

20. The Believers

21. The Eldorados – El Dorado

From Bulawayo

22. The Cyclones – Golden earrings

23. The Diamonds – My blue heaven

Comedy Songs

My old man’s a dustman

This is the first comedy song I ever heard on the radio, when I was a teenager. I wanted to buy the record, but my Dad got very upset and said I couldn’t. He was English, and I guess it made him feel bad.

I lost my Mummy

This is Rolf Harris with Australian humour. I heard this record on the radio when I was young.

The Bird

Jerry Reed has this interesting yarn about a bird that sings.

I’m my own Grandpa

I’ve heard this number on the radio, and thought it was far fetched, but interesting.

Side by side

Here is George Younce singing different words to this popular number.

Mississippi squirrel revival

Someone sent me this to my email.

Saginaw Michigan

George Jones tells the story of the greedy father-in-law.

Things you don’t say to your wife

Tim Hawkins gives us some wise advice.

Favourite Love Songs for Weddings

Hi. I have made a list of my favourite love songs for weddings, and I hope you find it helpful if you are planning to get married. Back in the sixty’s I sang a song at my cousin’s marriage called : “Whom God hath joined together.” Then I was going to sing it at my own ceremony in 1972, but she pitched up at the church unexpectedly. I felt embarrassed to sing the same number that I did at her marriage, so, on the spur of the moment I sang a different one that was not appropriate, and I made a right mess.

1. Whom God hath joined together

“Whom God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.” I heard it on a Stuart Hamblen record, but I can’t find it on the internet. Marriage is supposed to be forever. For better or for worse, for richer or for poorer.

2. Loving you

The way he sings it out on the farm is so tender. “I could spend my whole life through, loving you, just loving you.”

3. Could I have this dance?

“Could I have this dance for the rest of my life? Would you be my partner every night? When we’re together, it feels so right.” The pictures on this video are so beautiful and romantic. You can’t have it better than this! One of my favourite love songs for weddings.

4. Forever and for always

“I’m keeping you forever and for always.” The way this video is done is so beautiful, tracing love from childhood through to old age. That is the way it is supposed to be.

5. Why do I love you?

“I love you because you are helping to make of the lumber of my life, not a tavern, but a temple.” This song points out that his partner is helping him to become a better person. That’s what we all need.

6. True love

“While I give to you, and you give to me, true love, true love.” This scene is so romantic. I read the book where all her leading men fell in love with her.

7. Love me tender

I have chosen the movie version because of all the meaning behind the story. He marries the girl on the chair in the movie. “I’ll be yours through all the years, till the end of time.” It’s a pity in real life it didn’t work out like that.

8. I’ll never find another you

“I could search the whole world over until my life is through, but I know I’ll never find another you.” This was a hit when I was a teenager.

9. You’re the reason I’m living

“A long, long time ago, when I was down. You picked me up and showed me, true love still could be found.” Some really good words here.

10. My happiness

“Whether skies are gray or blue, any place on earth will do, just as long as I’m with you, my happiness.” Beautiful words. I think I heard my Mother sing this , but it is still one of my favourite love songs from a long time ago.

11. The search is ended

“I’ve searched the whole over for someone just like you.” “You’re the perfect girl, and I’ll tell the world, the search is ended.” Some very good words there. This song might go down well at a wedding.

12. Good luck charm

“Your love is worth all the gold on earth.” I remember when we first visited America, this song was on my mind.

13. A world of our own

“Just leave us alone, and we’ll live in a world of our own.” That’s what marriage is all about.

14. Welcome to my world

“Welcome to my world, won’t you come on in.” This number was very popular in Rhodesia. Many meaningful words.

15. There’ll never be anyone else but you for me

I think this is still one of the most beautiful love songs.

16. The nearest thing to heaven

“You’re the nearest thing to heaven, yes you are, I have searched for happiness so long and far.” Everyone is searching for happiness. Sometime I lie in bed at night and sing this over in my mind. This is one of the best of my favourite love songs.

17. All I ask of you

“Love me, that’s all I ask of you.” I saw this on TV in Africa many years ago, and just found it last week on the net. This is so beautiful and romantic. I think right now this could classify as my favourite love song for a wedding. I imagine it on a big screen behind the people getting married. Wow.

18. A Wedding Song – (favourite love)

I just heard this song, so am adding it. To me, it feels perfect for a wedding. “God bless this couple.”

Favourite Romantic Love Songs

I have about 50 Favourite Romantic Love Songs, and I will list some of them here. Most of these I know off by heart, but I might slip up on a few words here and there. Sometimes I change words to suit myself.

1. You’re the nearest thing to heaven

Some girls are stunningly beautiful, and this songs gives an insight into how important the girl is to the guy. “I’ve sailed the peaceful waters of the oceans deep and blue. I’ve held my breath and watched the western sunset’s golden hue. I’ve flown above the mountain tops, of valleys wide and green, but you’re the nearest thing to heaven that I’ve seen.”

2. Blue Hawaii

When I watched the movie, this song was used in the beginning, but it would have been very effective as a romantic scene with Elvis on the beach in the moonlight. “Night and you, and Blue Hawaii, the night is heavenly, and you are heaven to me. Lovely you, and Blue Hawaii, with all this loveliness, there should be love.” This is one of my favourite romantic love songs.

3. Let the little bird fly

I can’t find this song on the web, but I have a record of Charlie Rich singing it, and it brings back memories of the house we lived in when I was a teenager, and the sweet girl Margaret who lived down the street. “She came into my life one spring, swinging her doll on an old tire swing. She was just ten, and I’d just turned thirteen.”

4. I love you because

I first heard this song by Jim Reeves, and I longed to find a girl who could understand me. My wife seems to understand me more than most people I have ever met. “I love you because you understand dear, every single thing I try to do. You’re always there to lend a helping hand dear, but most of all I love you ’cause you’re you.”

5. One of my Favourite Romantic Love Songs – Kiss me quick

Elvis sang so many romantic numbers. “Kiss me quick, while we still have this feeling, hold me close, and never let me go, for tomorrows can be so uncertain, love can fly and leave just hurting, so kiss me quick, because I love you so.”

6. I won’t forget you

Some people I have known, I can’t forget. Each person is so special in their own particular way. “I know that I won’t forget you, for I’ve loved you too much for too long. Though you don’t want me now, I’ll still love you, till the breath in my body is gone.”

7. I’ve enjoyed as much of this as I can stand

“You look lovelier tonight than I remember. I’m so glad I got to see you once again.” The beginning words in this song are so nice, but it gets a bit sad later on. It holds a lot of memories for me.

8. Wooden Heart

I went through a big heartbreak with my mother, and this song took on a whole new meaning. “Can’t you see I love you? Please don’t break my heart in two, that’s not hard to do, ’cause I don’t have a wooden heart. And if you say ‘Goodbye’ then I know that I will cry, maybe I would die, ’cause I don’t have a wooden heart.”

9. Blueberry Hill

“I found my thrill, on Blueberry Hill, on Blueberry Hill, where I found you. The moon stood still, on Blueberry Hill, and it lingered until, my dreams came true.” To be in the car, kissing in the moonlight on the hill, is so exciting. I still sing this in my mind so I guess it is one of my favourite romantic love songs.

10. Teddy Bear

“Baby let me be, your loving Teddy Bear, put a chain around my neck and lead me anywhere, oh let me be, your Teddy Bear. Baby let me be, ’round you every night , run your fingers through my hair , and cuddle up me real tight, oh let me be, your Teddy Bear.” I always wanted a girl to run her fingers through my hair.

11. You belong to my heart

When I was young, this song seemed so fantastic, that a girl could blow a kiss with her eyes. Then I could hear a million guitars playing! “‘Twas a moment like this, don’t you remember? When your eyes blew a kiss, when they met mine. Now we own all the stars, and a million guitars are still playing. Darling you are the one, and you’ll always belong to my heart.”

12. Please help me I’m falling

I heard this song when I was in my early teens, and it seemed so tragic, and yet so real. Some people are so easy to love, that we have to put the brakes on, so we don’t cross over the cheating line. “Please help me I’m falling in love with you, close the door to temptation, don’t let me walk through. Turn away from me darling, I’m begging you to. Please help me I’m falling, in love with you.”

13. It’s now or never

Sometimes love gets desperate. We all need love, and have to find it somewhere and somehow. “It’s now or never, come hold me tight. Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight.”

14. You’re the only good thing that’s happened to me

“We have our ups and downs, like all lovers do, but you know in your heart, that I adore you. So don’t ever think of setting me free, you’re the only good thing that’s happened to me.” I changed one word here because worship is reserved for God. We mustn’t worship a human being, because none of us are perfect, we all have our faults and failures.

15. All shook up

“Well a bless my soul a what’s a wrong with me? I’m a itching like a man on a fuzzy tree. My friends say I’m acting wild as a bug – I’m in love!” Love can mix people up and make them act all crazy.

16. Baby I don’t care

“You don’t like a hot rod racing, you don’t like a rocking bands, you just wanna park where it’s nice and dark, and kiss and hold me tight, you’re so square, Baby I don’t care.” The main thing is love, but it helps if you can marry someone who has similar interests as you, and similar religious beliefs.

17. Blue skies

“Never saw the sun shining so bright, never saw things going so right. Noticing the days hurrying by, when you’re in love, my how they fly.” Where I grew up in Africa, we had blue skies every day.

18. Won’t you wear my ring

“They say that going steady is not the proper thing. They say that we’re too young to know the meaning of a ring. I only know that I love you, and that a you love me too, so Darling this is what I beg of you.” When I was a kid and heard this song, it seemed so fantastic. I loved the drums and the music and the way the Jordanaires sang with Elvis.

19. Oh boy

“Stars appear and the shadows a fallin’, a you can hear a my heart’s a callin’, a little bit o’ loving puts a ev’rything a right, so I’m a gonna see a my a baby tonight.” When I was a little boy, this song was a hit, and it seemed so wonderful to be in love.

20. When the girl in your arms

“When the girl in your arms, is the girl in your heart, then you have everything.” One time by the fireside in our garden, my brother in law requested for me to sing this song. There is a lot of truth to the words.

21. You’re my best friend

“You placed gold on my finger, you brought love, like I’ve never known. You gave life to our children, and to me, a reason to go on.” Everyone needs a friend and a partner, or else life is not complete. A favourite romantic love song.

22. Wolverton Mountain

“Her tender lips are sweeter than honey.” This was another hit when I was a kid, and it seemed so exciting. Someone had a video on the internet with beautiful pictures depicting each scene of the song, but it was taken off. Pity.

23. Lucky lips

“Lucky lips are always kissing, lucky lips are never blue.” Cliff Richard had a big hit with this one, and we all wished we could be as lucky as him.

24. Traveling light

“I just can’t wait to be with my baby tonight.” This one takes me back to traveling down on the South Coast of Natal. Somebody said once that the road to a friend’s house is never long.

25. All I have to do is dream

“I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine, anytime, night or day, only trouble is , gee wiz, I’m dreaming my life away.” Most of my life I have lived in a dream world, because it is more exciting than the real world.

26. ‘D’ in love

“You need a fortnight’s a kissing, you need to practice a nightly a hugging, you gotta squeeze move tightly, I recommend this a remedy – a lots and lots and lots and lots of a homework with me.” At high school this song seemed outrageous, but I secretly wished I could be a good lover.

27. I need your love tonight

“I’ve been a waiting just a for tonight, to do some loving and a holding you tight.” Elvis was our hero, and we all wished we could be as good looking and romantic as him.

28. Save the last dance for me

“But don’t forget who’s taking you home and in who’s arms you’re gonna be, so Darling save the last dance for me.” At my girlfriend’s party, I was playing guitar and singing in the band, while she was dancing with another guy. I got so mad with jealousy that I packed up and went home!

29. Remember me

“Remember me when the candle lights are gleaming, remember me at the close of a long long day. It would be so sweet when all alone I’m dreaming, just to know that you still remember me.” I associate this number with a farm in Africa, where it feels so lonely and isolated. I heard Charles Jacobie sing it when I lived in Rhodesia.

30. Somebody loves you

“Somebody loves you each hour of the day, when you’re around dear or when you’re away.” My wife sang this to me. Very beautiful words. Unfortunately I couldn’t find it on the net.

31. I walk the line

“I keep you on my mind both day and night.” “And happiness I’ve know proves that it’s right.” I hope everybody out there is happy.

32. Moonlight Bay

“You have stolen my heart, now don’t go away.” It is so romantic to be young and in love in the moonlight.

33. When my blue moon turns to gold again

“Oh those red lips that used to thrill me so, all those kisses that were meant for only me, well someday they gonna live again sweetheart, when my blue moon is just a memory.”

34. Blue eyes crying in the rain

“When we meet again up yonder, we’ll stroll hand in hand again, in a land that knows no parting, blue eyes crying in the rain.” I always associate this song with the Berlin wall where people were separated. One day we can meet again in heaven.

Hit Instrumentals

When I was young there were a lot of hit songs that were just instrumentals, so I have decided to share some of them with you.

Wheels by The String-a-Longs

Here is a swinging little song. I used to know an old time song that I can’t find on the net, called Wagon Wheels, that went like this: “Wagon wheels, wagon wheels, keep on turning, wagon wheels. Roll along, sing your song, wagon wheels carry me home.”

Red River Rock by Johnny and the Hurricanes

One of my favorite love songs was Red River Valley, and this version tied it in with the rock and roll scene.

Walk Don’t Run by The Ventures

This was very popular, and I heard it again recently on the radio.

Wipeout by The Beach Boys

The other day a mail lady mentioned this song to me, so here it is by the Beach Boys. We have had some real bad weather here in Canada recently.

Baby Elephant Walk by Henry Mancini

This song was a hit when I was a kid, and it was only about a year ago I discovered it was on the John Wayne movie “Hatari.”

Pipeline by The Ventures

We had a record in Rhodesia of The Ventures teaching you how to play the three guitars. I think this song was used as the background music for an advert on TV.

Red Sails in the Sunset by Billy Vaughn

When I was little, my aunt and uncle in Uvongo used to play this song on their mouth organs on their veranda at sunset. Nice memories.

Raunchy Twist by The G Men

Somewhere in my youthful childhood I seem to remember hearing this song.

Sail Along Silvery Moon by Billy Vaughn

I love this song. The music is so nice. It would be nice if someone could make a nice power point of this song with two lovers by the beach in the moonlight.

Stranger on the Shore by Acker Bilk

This was another hit song when I was a teenager.

White silver sands

Here is another nice song, that makes me want to be by the beach.

Hit Instrumentals – Amazing Grace – Bagpipes

I played in a band once where the keyboard man had bagpipes on his keyboard. Unfortunately my keyboard doesn’t have bagpipes, but I make use of the drums and the strings instead.

The British Invasion

In North America I have heard the term “British Invasion” meaning the time when singers like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones dominated the pop charts. I was in Bulawayo (Africa) at the time, and would like to share with you some of the singers and songs I enjoyed.

Sandie Shaw – Puppet on a string

“Love is just like a merry-go-round, with all the fun of the fair, one day I’m feeling down on the ground, then I’m up in the air.” I remember singing this song to myself many years later when I was taking my children to the fun fair at Germiston Lake. I remember going on the roller coaster and being high in the sky with the big wheel. Love is a lot like that. Sometimes you are up, and sometimes you are down, but it is a lot of fun, when you look back and forget all the heartaches! So this is one of my favorite love songs of the British Invasion.

The Beatles – I want to hold your hand

I think the Beatles basically ‘spearheaded’ the British Invasion, and all the other singers followed in their wake. It was round about that time that I started dating. I was too shy and scared to ask a girl out, but one night after being at a Baptist Church youth meeting, some of us were walking down a street in Bulawayo, and a couple in front of me were holding hands and laughing. I wanted to date the girl walking beside me, but I was too shy to ask her, and was afraid of being rejected. Eventually I built up enough courage to reach over and hold her hand. She didn’t pull it away! What a fantastic feeling. (It was like a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind – sort of thing). That was the beginning of a whole new world for me. A lot of joys and heartaches on the way.

The Rolling Stones – The last time

I think the Rolling Stones kept the British Invasion rolling which opened the door for other groups to follow. When I was a teenager I remember seeing on TV The Rolling Stones singing “live” at a stadium, and all the girls screaming. I wish I could find that on the internet, but I can’t. I remember parents complaining about their children being corrupted. I must admit that they had a big fan base. There is something about their music that has a type of hypnotic effect. I think the only Rolling Stone song I sang was: “It’s all over now.”

Herman’s Hermits – There’s a kind of hush

I think Herman’s Hermits were the third most powerful force in the British Invasion. This is a very romantic song, although I was too shy to sing it when I was a teenager. They had a lot of hits, like Henry the eighth, No milk today, and Mrs Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter. I read in a book that Mickey Most was their manager and also managed Donovan.

Engelbert Humperdinck – The last waltz

He had a lot of hit songs, but some of them are so sad that I can’t listen to them. I have about 20 of his LP records that I bought at a sale. I have heard this song on the radio a few times lately, and it brings good memories, so I have chosen it for here.

Mary Hopkin – Those were the days

Marianne Faithfull – As tears go by

The Kinks – A well respected man

Gerry and the Pacemakers – Ferry cross the Mersey

British Invasion – Life goes on

The guys in our band in Bulawayo liked this song, but I have only found out now that they are called The Marmalade. I thought they were called Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beaty, Mick and Tich.

Tom Jones – Green green grass of home

I was at college when I first heard this song, and I longed to be back home.

Stuart Hamblen

This Old House

To me, Stuart Hamblen is one of the great modern gospel singers and songwriters. Many years ago I had a record of Jimmy Dean singing this song, and he said that Stuart and a buddy got caught in a blizzard, and looking for a place of shelter came across an old prospectors shack. He told his buddy that there was a dead man in the shack, because there was a dog on the porch, and no smoke coming out the chimney. When they went inside they found it so. So they started a fire, and by the light of the fireplace he wrote this song on an old cracker box.

It is no secret what God Can do

To me this is so exciting to hear the man sing his own song, and to hear the background story. I used to write hundreds of songs, but got criticized, and stopped writing. I am hoping to start again one day soon. It is exciting to me to hear Billy Graham’s introduction, and to hear how John Wayne was involved. For over forty years I have been singing this song to myself, and it has been such a blessing to me. It is one of my all time favorites.

Stuart Hamblen – Pappys Old Banjo

I heard this song in my twenties, and I felt strongly about the feelings it invoked in me. Many many years later, I wrote a song that invoked the same feelings, based on a dream I had. One day I may put my songs on the net too.

They that wait upon the Lord

I have heard this song sung in many churches, and it is always a blessing. Some people mock his singing, but to me he is a tremendous songwriter. When I used to sing, I was always looking for new material.

Until then 1 and Until Then 2

This song is still a tremendous blessing to me.

These things shall pass

When I was young, and troubles would come my way, this song was a tremendous comfort to me. It says: “steel is strong because it knew the hammer and white heat.” The idea is that troubles make us stronger. I hope that is correct, but I still don’t like troubles. This is Johnny Cash singing this version. He went through a lot of troubles too.

How big is God?

I think this is another one of Stuart’s great songs. The first time I heard this song, it was the introductory song on a movie, but can’t remember what movie it was.

I also have a Gospel web site. If you want to check it out, go to:  http://countrygospelandbible.com/

Dream Love Songs

Baby Maybe

“Baby maybe I’m dreaming.” My wife sent me this song of Liona Boyd some time back, and she really loves it. It is beautifully romantic. It is much better than all the news of war and killing that we see on the news. I wish I was at the beach right now!

All I have to do is dream

Here is a favorite love song by the Everly Brothers and often runs through my mind. Most of my life I have lived in a make believe world. It is much better than the real world.

Sweet Dream Baby

I often hear Roy Orbison sing this on the radio. God said it is not good for man to be alone, so he made a wife for Adam. Every man needs a woman.

Dream Lover

Here is Bobby Darin also singing about his need for an ideal lover. To be lonely is a very terrible thing. The Beatles sang a song once about all the lonely people. There are so many lonely people in the world.

May you always

I heard this song for the first time the other day on the radio, and I felt I must put it on this page. One line in the song says: “May you always be a dreamer, may your wildest dreams come true.” The McGuire Sisters are a bit before my time, but I think this song is very beautiful. I have to abbreviate my main word because they say if I use it too often, then I am trying to milk the search engines.

Follow that dream

My apologies to all the Elvis fans, I forgot to put him on this page. How could I have been so blind! So here he is singing about following it. If you haven’t seen the movie, shame on you!

I bowed on my knees

“I dreamed of a city called Glory, so bright and so fair.” This is a very holy song about going to heaven. I used to sing it myself many years ago. Here is the Gaither Homecoming group singing it.

Favourite Love Songs by Buddy Holly

Most of the favourite love songs by Buddy Holly that I had listed
here were deleted from the internet, so I just have a few left.

Peggy Sue

When I was a teenager I knew a girl by the name of Peggy, and associated her with this song. I don’t know who sang the song, but I know a lot of singers all over the world sing everybody’s songs. I think this love song was written about one of the guy’s girlfriends that was in the Crickets.

Everyday

Again, I must have heard this love song by Mickey Most. As a teenager I think I was looking for lessons in life and love. That song says: “Go ahead and ask her.” I grew up shy, and was so scared to ask a girl out. I won’t go into any details here as to how things happened. You have to work out your own love life. Good luck.

Maybe Baby

So many songs have catchy phrases, that I find them running in my head all the time, like this one. There is another song that I will probably do on my next page, where a girl sings “Baby Maybe.” I guess in the music industry they call them ‘hooks.’ “Maybe baby you’ll be true.” The problem with having a pretty girlfriend is that every other guy wants her too. There is a song I have heard on he radio where they sing: “If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, don’t make a pretty woman your wife.”

Raining in my heart

I have heard this song on the radio in Canada, and I presumed it was written by Buddy, but I see it was written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. I remember reading about them and all the famous songs they have written for the Everley Brothers. I find it interesting how people have written about love and the problems that go with it. This song is an example of that. I had a young lady in my taxi the other day that wanted to learn how to write songs. Each song is like a message to hungry hearts, to try and find the right way.

I saw the movie, and they showed the minister of the church preaching against him, but when I read the book, it said he was friends with the minister, and they donated their royalties to the church. So you can’t always believe what you see in the movies. I heard one of the guys in the band say that there were no hills in Lubbock Texas, but in the movie there were hills in the background. Anyway, I hope he made it to the holy hills of heaven.

South African Comedy

Jeremy Taylor – Lift girls lament

Jeremy used to write and sing a lot of fun songs. I remember one song about taking his horse to town, and the policeman stuck a parking ticket on the horses bum.

Al Debbo – Sonbrilletjies

I wanted to get his song about all the dogs in Turfontein, but couldn’t find it, so I have here his song about sunglasses. There was a hit song by Sandy Posey about sunglasses, and this is a spoof on that song in the Afrikaans language.

South African Comedy – Zebra

There is a guy in South Africa that made a lot of comedy movies. His name is Leon Schuster. Here is one clip.

Getting meat in Zimbabwe

My family say this was done by photoshop. When I grew up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), the whole northern section was teeming with wildlife. I have heard many times on the news that some of the people are now starving.

UNTAG comes in

There is a whole movie about the United Nations group called UNTAG, but I haven’t seen it.

Americans in Africa

I have laughed so much over this stupid clip, but language communication is a very big problem in Africa. I sang once at a mission station in Rhodesia, and the missionary told me how he told the people in his sermon that the gospel is free, and the interpreter told the people the the gospel was cheap. So he stopped the interpreter, and explained that it cost Jesus His life. Later on, terrorists attacked that mission station and killed all the missionaries.

Pictures of Africa

This is not comedy, but it is pictures of different places in Africa. I have only been in eight countries in Southern Africa, but many people in North America think that Africa is all mud huts and jungles. Most of Africa is mud huts, but there are also big cities teeming with millions of people. One time in South Africa I was riding with an American missionary in his cadillac, and I spoke to him about this. He said that when he goes back to the States he only shows pictures of his mission work in order to build up funds.

Stuck in the fence

This is a comedy clip of a person trying to get through the fence from Zimbabwe to South Africa. It is a very real problem in Africa. When there is trouble in one country, the people flee to another one.

The gods must be crazy trailer

This movie gives a glimpse of life in Southern Africa. I think it is the most well know South African comedy movie.

The gods must be crazy 2 trailer

I enjoyed the second South African comedy movie more than the first. It is one of my favorite movies.

Lady and the baboon

To me this is real good South African comedy. I enjoyed the scene there the American lady tries to get water from the windmill, and her interaction with the baboon.

When I was a kid in Rhodesia, Wrex Tarr was a big hit. I have just found some of the things I remember.

Little Red Riding Hood

Listen to it, it is funny.

Cricket

How to make rain, British style.

Zacka nacka tablets

Funny commercial, African style.
